Mission

To provide a variety of food to refugees, low-income families, and senior citizens every Saturday of the year. To partner with other ministries and organizations who feed the homeless and food insecure in Mecklenburg and Union Counties.

Volunteering Saturday Mornings at Mel’s Diner

Here is a brief overview of how a typical Saturday at Mel’s Diner runs, starting between 8 to 8:30. Volunteers are divided up and work on the following tasks.

Sort casseroles and keep warm, help manage food flow
Fill clamshells with food
Add rolls, forks, and pack bags
Wash pans and utensils
Pack 110 lunch bags for the children
Pack 50 grocery bags for the seniors
Clean-up duty: sweep floors, remove trash, and manage the recycling
Load truck
Prayer circle before leaving for service location
Go to locations and serve our guests

Volunteering During the Week:

Drivers are needed to pick up food from various locations within a 5-mile radius of St. Matthew and deliver to the parish center or other locations being served.
Friday morning kitchen prep for Saturday by packaging eggs, traying up frozen food, and stocking our shelves. Prepare casseroles, and purchase fresh fruit, canned goods, and other needed food items.
