Charlotte Men’s Shelter Needs Volunteers

1. Winter Weather Brigade When the weather dips below freezing, we open overflow, which typically means 50 additional men will stay on mats overnight in our dining hall. This brings more activity to our shelter.

  • Responsibilities Check-in guests, set up dining hall, and address guests' needs.
  • Shifts 4:15 to 7 pm; 7 to 10 pm on an as-needed basis during overflow nights at our North Tryon Street campus
  • Needs Two volunteers per shift, though recruiting 40 to 50 individuals to build a pool of volunteers ready to serve
  • Training Training dates will be announced. Most training will occur on-site during volunteer shift.

2. Housing Blitz As part of our effort to more quickly connect our guests with housing, we've initiated Housing Blitz, where guests can quickly explore different housing options with case management staff. 

  • Responsibilities Welcome guests, guide guests to appropriate resources, and assist guests with completion of paperwork.
  • Shifts 7 to 9 pm during the second and fourth Thursday of each month at our North Tryon Street campus
  • Needs Six to eight volunteers per shift - Signing up now through March.
  • Training Training will occur on-site during volunteer shift.

3. Walk-Up Services We've initiated daily walk-up services where guests can request bus passes, connect to prescription assistance, request a leave of stay, and request other basic needs. 

  • Responsibilities Work side-by-side with case management staff to address guests' requests.
  • Shifts 9 am to noon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday; 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday and Thursday at our North Tryon Street campus
  • Needs One to two volunteers per shift - Committing to a weekly shift is preferable.
