Welcome to St. Matthew Elementary Children’s Ministry Program! The early elementary years focus on supporting parents in preparing their child for reception of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. The later years introduce the concepts of discipleship, service and Catholic doctrine that helps us live out these sacraments! Our Children’s Ministry team is dedicated to praying for your child and family as you help them embrace and live out the Catholic Faith!

Kindergarten

Staff Coordinator: Lisa Tavares, 704-541-8362 x4

Curriculum: Pflaum Gospel Weeklies

Children in kindergarten have the option of enrolling in our Sunday morning program, or one of our weekday classes.

Joining together with their peers, kindergarten children will be immersed in their Catholic faith through an interactive curriculum which introduces them to essential faith concepts and God’s mighty love. Lessons are presented through stories, music, games, activities and crafts.

Sacramental Year 1 and 2

In the Diocese of Charlotte, two consecutive years are necessary as part of the preparation for reception of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.  Children may begin this program in first grade to receive the sacraments in second grade; or enroll in second grade to receive the sacraments in third grade.  Children beginning sacramental prep in third grade or older will be placed in our RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) program.

Staff Coordinator: Lori Mathews, 704-541-8362 x4

Curriculum: RCL Benziger Blest Are We, Faith In Action

In the first year of preparation, children explore the basic teachings of our Catholic faith.  A special focus on prayer is highlighted when the children make their own rosary in the fall.  In the early spring, children participate in a tour of the church and a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the Mass.

During the second year of preparation, children are immersed in learning about the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. A combination of catechist-led lessons, parent-child retreats, and at home reinforcement lessons help the child and parent understand the meaning of the sacraments in the context of our daily faith life.

More information of the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist can be found here.

Grades 3, 4 and 5

Staff Coordinator (Grade 3): Lisa Tavares, 704-541-8362 x5

Staff Coordinator (Grade 4 and 5): Amy Bojarski, 704-541-8362

Curriculum: RCL Benziger Blest Are We, Faith In Action

During the later elementary grades, your child will be taught how to build upon their Catholic faith by learning how we worship and how we can live our beliefs in everyday life.

Our children in 3rd grade continue their faith journey after having received the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Eucharist. During December, our 3rd graders present A Christmas Cantata for all Faith Formation students and families.

Children in 4th grade begin to deepen their exploration of concepts introduced in the earlier elementary years, with emphasis on the saints. 4th graders present a living Stations of the Cross prayer service during Lent.

In order to prepare our 5th grade students for the upcoming middle school years, the focus begins to shift towards living out our faith through service and acts of charity. Students are encouraged to participate in one of our four Sandwich Ministry days.

Family Discipleship

This new program is offered for families with children in third, fourth or fifth grade.

Curriculum: RCL Benziger Blest Are We, Faith In Action

Family Discipleship combines a series of six parent-child community sessions with at home individual or small group learning.  The focus of these years is to teach children how to build upon their Catholic faith by learning how we worship and how we can live our beliefs in everyday life, while offering parents support in their own faith life and guidance in catechizing their children in Catholic doctrine and way of life.
