In the Diocese of Charlotte, at least one full year of formal religious education (Catholic school or Faith Formation) is necessary prior to receiving the sacrament of first reconciliation, and at least two full consecutive years of formal religious education are necessary prior to receiving the sacrament of first holy Eucharist. Children may receive the sacrament of first Eucharist in the spring of second grade or older. Therefore, if your child is in public or private (not Catholic) school, your child must be registered in first grade in order to receive the sacraments in second grade.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL children who have completed one year of Faith Formation or Catholic school in first grade must register with the Faith Formation office in second grade in order to receive the sacraments in the parish. If there has not been a year of Faith Formation or Catholic school completed, parents must contact the Director of Religious Education to learn how to proceed.
PUBLIC or PRIVATE (non-Catholic) SCHOOL children begin their preparation by registering for “Year 1” of First Sacraments in either first or second grade, followed by “Year 2” in second or third grade. It is during Year 2 that both sacraments will be received. Children entering the program in third grade or older are eligible for our RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) program and should contact the Director of Religious Education to learn how to proceed.
