St. Matthew > Faith Formation > Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

Considering becoming Catholic?

What is OCIA? The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the typical way that an individual learns more about the Catholic understanding of God and the teachings, prayers and traditions of the Catholic Church. This is done through attendance at sessions through out the year, asking questions and spending time discerning entry into the Catholic faith.

Who helps me on this journey? Aside from the Holy Spirit, you will be guided by priests, deacons and a team of lay volunteers. In addition, you will choose or be paired with a sponsor. A sponsor is a confirmed Catholic, living their faith and happy to share this faith with others.

What if I am only seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation? Even if you have received the other sacraments, the OCIA process is the best journey towards this final sacrament of Initiation to help provide you with a full understanding other the Catholic faith.

When does OCIA meet? And can I attend virtually or do the course at home? OCIA typically meets on Sunday mornings (10:30 am to noon) or Monday evenings (7 to 8:30 pm). Participants choose the time that works best for them on any given week. It is important to attend these sessions in person, as you are joining a family – the Body of Christ – and this is not a journey to walk on your own. However, we are willing to work with those who have medical, work or other situations that may prevent attendance at all sessions.
