Job Summary:
St. Matthew Catholic Church is seeking a detail-oriented, ethical, and mission-driven Finance Controller to oversee the financial operations of the parish and its ministries. This role ensures fiscal integrity and compliance with Diocesan financial policies, as well as local, state, and federal regulations. The Finance Controller works closely with the Chief Financial Officer, Parish Finance Council, and parish staff to prepare and manage budgeting, reporting, and stewardship of parish resources.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and assist in all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports for the Pastor and Finance Council
- Develop and manage the annual parish budget in collaboration with the Pastor and department heads
- Monitor and analyze financial performance; provide strategic recommendations based on data
- Ensure compliance with Diocesan financial guidelines and internal controls
- Responsible for parish bookkeeping, donations tracking, and financial recordkeeping systems
- Coordinate and support external audits and Diocesan financial reviews
- Supervise and support finance and administrative staff or volunteers, if applicable
- Assist with preparation of tax filings, including W-2s, 1099s, and other required documentation
- Overlook timely processing of employee payroll, benefits administration, and HR compliance
- Collaborate with ministries and committees on financial planning and stewardship initiatives
- Maintain confidentiality and uphold the mission and values of the Catholic Church in all aspects of work
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required)
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting/financial management experience; nonprofit or church experience is a plus
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial standards
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g. ParishSOFT, ACS, CRM systems etc.)
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills
- High level of integrity, discretion, and commitment to ethical practices
- Practicing Catholic preferred; must support the mission and teachings of the Catholic Church
Working Conditions:
- Typical office environment within the parish offices
- May require occasional evening or weekend hours to attend Finance Council meetings or parish events
